Best for people who has steriliser and can reuse the jars
Genuine Ball jars 1 Liter, Filled 60% with a grain of your choice (Organic Rye berries or Millet). Sterilized to field capacity and ready to use, Gypsum and Calcium Carbonate were added as supplements.
Each jar is filled with 400-450 gms grains (Wet).
The plastic lid contains an injection port and air filter vent and is also reusable like the jar. Both Jar and Lid are autoclavable and reusable.
Use an injection port to inject spores or liquid culture anywhere from 5 ml to 10 ml. The air vent filter is for gaseous exchange.
Every mycelium Colonizes at around 22-24° C and each mycelium has its fruiting temperature.
Both Rye and Millet will support the growth of every fungus that people normally grow. Some may prefer one of another but we do not have a guide on which species prefers which grains, if you want to experiment, please buy a mix. (Just leave a note for us to send a mix of rye and millet).
Rye is more nutritious whereas millet has more inoculation points to reduce contamination risk. If you want to know more which grain is the best, please view this article.

STORAGE
Do not leave your jars inside a cupboard for colonization for storage before inoculation is fine. They need to sit somewhere with fresh airflow but away from direct sunlight or direct airflow while mycelium is colonizing the grains. Do not store unused jars inside the fridge. Only fully colonized jars can go inside the fridge to slow down the growth of the mycelium. Prioritize airflow over darkness.
Use within 2 weeks of dispatch. The grains will last one month in shipment but it’s advisable to use them as soon as possible. Condensation in the Jar after postage is normal. Please shake the jar thoroughly to redistribute moisture.
CONTAMINATION AND BREAKAGE POLICY
If you receive these jars contaminated, we can only refund you $5 per jar and cannot replace it. The jars are checked for leakage and monitored for sterilization, most of the time contamination happens due to contaminated liquid culture spore syringe or agar.
If you open these jars to inoculate with agar and the jar is contaminated we cannot refund you. We recommend after receiving these jars, store them in a cool dry spot away from direct sunlight or direct airflow for up to 2 weeks(Never in the fridge) and contact us if they are contaminated during that time. Once the jars are inoculated, it’s not possible to know the source of contamination.
It is best to drop a bit of spore/liquid culture in an agar plate before inoculating these jars to check if the contamination happened due to faulty jars or liquid culture.
In case some Pre-sterilized grain jars arrive broken, please get in touch with us immediately or within 72 hours of delivery; after that, we cannot help you with any complaints of breakage as this is a glass product. Please carefully inspect the jars for breakage, including any cracks that may only be visible on careful inspection. We can only refund for a broken jar. We cannot replace it unless you bring the jar back to us(Sydney Residents). We will refund $20 per jar if it’s broken.
TIPS
1)Be ready to move to the next step once the grain jars are fully colonized. Do not leave your grains inside the jar for long; otherwise, they will harden and become a rigid rock and will be impossible to take out. If that happens, do not try to break the content of the jar by hitting with the palm of your other hand in case the jar shatters.
2)When reusing the jar and lid, please do not fill your jar more than 60-70%. We need the headspace for gaseous exchange. Both jars and lids are autoclavable.
3)Please do not open the jar lid, as the contents will no longer remain sterile. Only open them after full colonization.
4)If your jar is contaminated, do not throw it or the lid away. Empty the contents outside in the bin or the garden and wash the jar and the lid with hot water and soap or bleach. The lid, injection port, and air filter are reusable. You can also replace them after every use if you want.
5)While shaking the jar once or twice can speed up the growth, do not overdo it. It is recommended to shake once at 30% and again at 90%. Shaking at 90% is an absolute must to ensure even colonization.
6)Please remember to label your jar with the species of inoculation, the date, and the type of grain, as the grain type may not be visible after full colonization unless it is broken up.
7)Apart from using these Jars for grains, they can also be used to make Liquid culture.
SAFETY
Do not bang the glass jar on your opposite hand to break the clumps; the glass may break and pierce your arms. Instead, heat it on a soft surface like a couch or wrapped-up towel.
