Due to the specific conditions under which they thrive, Morel mushroom cultivation is typically best adapted to outdoor environments. Although there have been isolated instances of successful indoor cultivation, this required nearly ideal environmental replication using expensive equipment; companies that discovered it have patented the indoor cultivation process.
To cultivate Morels successfully, you must first prepare the soil. The ideal soil should be loamy and alkaline, enriched with wood particles and ash. Morels in nature typically flourish following forest fires, with an optimal pH level between 9 and 10.
Sawdust spawn or grain spawn are typically used to spread the mycelium outdoors. However, grain spawns are typically not recommended for outdoor distribution because birds and insects may reach them before the mycelium can propagate. Sawdust spawn proves to be the best medium for spreading mycelium.
Unpredictability in Morel cultivation is a factor that must be considered. In general, deciduous trees indicate a favourable environment as morel mushrooms form symbiotic relationships with these trees. We recommend preparing a shady area for your Morel crop, considering that it may take between one and two years for the mycelium network to become fully known and established. Once established, you can anticipate annual production increases. Set up your morel outdoor space in spring or autumn for the best chance of success. Important to remember is to keep your patch damp throughout the year.
YouTube contains many tutorials that could serve as a resource for more detailed instructions.
Lastly, when collecting Morels, please correctly identify them, as false Morels can occasionally grow in the same environment. True Morels are hollow, whereas false Morels are not; this is a distinguishing feature.
