What is Dry Light Malt Extract (DLME) Powder?
Light Malt Extract (DLME) is a concentrated liquid extract made from malted barley commonly used as an ingredient in brewing beer, ale, and mead. In mushroom growing, it is used to expand mycelium in various forms. It provides the ideal blend of nutrients and carbohydrates that mushroom mycelium needs for ideal growth.
What is Dried Malt Extract used for in mushroom growing?
These are some of the products Rootlab uses it for:
- Making agar plates such as MEA, MEAG and MYPA
- Making Slants with and without wood.
- Making liquid culture jars
What Ratios should I use with my DLME?
As a rule of thumb, use an amount of 10 grams of the item for every 500ml of water. For instance, if you’re making:
- 500ml of liquid culture, add 10 grams of DLME
- 1000ml of Agar Petri dishes, add 20 grams of DLME

Notes:
You can expect a little bit of sediment with this mix when making liquid culture jars, but as mycelium grows, they consumes all the sugars and you jars become clearer by the day.
How do I store my items?
Keep your item dry and cool to avoid melting and clumping. Our DLME includes desiccants to keep moisture away. Using an airtight container is also recommended to avoid moisture.
